The Troop’s first contingency to Philmont was created and ?? boys attended. Mr. Casapini, a Jackson Local Schools employee, coordinated the Troop getting ownership (donated??) of a used school bus, which provided transportation for Scouts and equipment for many years to come. 1976

The American Bicentennial brought more changes to Troop 35, as the Districts were reorganized and the Sippo District was renamed to the Westark District, which included Jackson Township to the west of Brunnerdale/Lake-O-Springs Road and most of western Stark County. There was the remaining problem of duplicate unit numbers as a result of the Massillon Area Council and McKinley Council merger in 1958. Up until this time, Districts had full control over assigning new unit numbers and there was no concern over other District’s unit numbers within the council. Buckeye Council determined that the old Massillon Area troops that had the same unit number as those of old McKinley Council troops would now add a ‘900’ to their unit numbers. This is how Troop 35 became Troop 935 (Troop 21, at St. Jacobs Lutheran Church on Mudbrook Street became 921; and Troop 27 at the Lake Cable Clubhouse became 927). Many Scouts in our unit refused to add the 9 to uniforms and even to this day some Westark troops resist accepting the additional digit.

1977

Pack 121 met at Jackson Elementary’s gym (now known as the White Gym at Jackson Middle School), sponsor was the Jackson Elementary PTA (confirm??). As the Pack grew, so did Troop 935. Dave Hoce joined as Scoutmaster moving up from the Pack with his son, Greg. Growing pains were being realized as the Troop grew to over 60 boys. The board of McDonaldsville Church had great concerns that the Church’s facilities weren’t capable of supporting a unit of such size as more and more room was needed for weekly meetings and equipment storage. The Church Board asked the Troop Committee to find a way to reduce the size of the Troop. Nearby Troop 921 was floundering with lack of adult leadership and youth numbers. Dave Hoce, Bob Ullum, Mike Kinsey, and a number of other 935 adult leaders ‘interviewed’ as a group for the leadership, but weren’t accepted by the Church. Dave then found a willing sponsor for a new unit, Troop 257, to be formed at the recently built Jackson Christian Church (now known as Rivertree Christian Church). Ironically, Troop 921 folded shortly afterwards due to lack of adult leaders. The split that created Troop 257 took most of 935’s adult and youth membership along with the relationship with Pack 121. The remaining Troop 935 was very much smaller, and just about overnight left the Troop with literally only a handful of boys, no adult leadership, and remnants of a committee. A return of past leaders Dieter Wolff, Larry Casapini along with additions of Gary Blankenship and J.T. Smith tried to get things going again. It would be a number of years before the Troop would recover from this split. The saddest outcome is that many boys left the Scouting program completely, lost in the adults’ ugly and unnecessary infighting during this time. However Troop 257 greatly succeeded in growth of the Scouting program in Jackson Township. Shortly afterwards, Dave Hoce left the area and Mike Kinsey succeeded him as Scoutmaster (still is as of 2007). In the mid 1990’s Jackson Christian itself asked Troop 257 to leave, and in a very ugly public affair the Troop was left without a home for a number of months before a new one was found at St. John Lutheran Church on Wales Road in Massillon.
